"OpenOffice.org 2.0 has gone from being a Beta to a Release Candidate
(RC). Congratulations to all who made this possible! As an RC,
OpenOffice.org 2.0 RC still--even more so--needs to be downloaded and
tested by the community. So we urge you to go to <http://
download.openoffice.org/2.0.0rc/index.html> and start the fun. The
sooner we clean up the bugs, the sooner we can come out with
OpenOffice.org 2.0.

And what is OpenOffice.org 2.0? The world's best and easiest to use
free productivity suite. Read the product page and features pages
for more information.

index.html>
* Product <http://www.openoffice.org/product2/index.html>
* Features <http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/features/2.0/index.html>

*** NOTE: For right now, Windows user will have to remove older Beta
and developer builds prior to the installation of the RC because of
an incorrect interpretation of their version information by the
Windows Installer. As a matter of course the stable version
OpenOffice.org 1.1.x (most recent: 1.1.5) can be used concurrently.

Cheers to all,

Team OpenOffice.org"

Gordon

Yep, it's definitely looking good John. The compatability with MS
Office documents in particular seems much improved.

I just installed it on a friend's daughter's computer. I also put Java
RT on the system (hey, it ain't MY computer!) Can't for the life of me
figure out if that 30 mb Python scripting module is necessary though.

Yea;

I was going to reply to your original post wrt to java. Thought you had
a religious conversion or something <grin>.

Data point: I installed it and began setting up a simple data base.
Tables went smoothly with a variety of field definitions used. The
whole proggy crashed when I went to define the forms. This is the first
pre-rel 2.0 where that's happened, btw.

Good news is the file-recovery function worked like a champ.

A dialogue box came up saying what had happened, that the proggy would
relaunch and may it have permission to send a crash dump. It also
showed the contents of the dump and allowed me to add a note as well as
specify an email addy or none.

Sure enough, the proggy relaunched, the base file came up intact and I
finished the test database. The whole process, from crash to editing
forms again, took less than two minutes.

Mixed thoughts on this one. It's like having the San Diego Padres
"winning" the NL West w/a .500 record...It's an ugly win.
