OpenOffice.org 1.9.122 is out. This is the latest beta of Ooo 2.
There's no need to be alarmed about the frequent updates; their stated
policy is to release a new beta about once a month.

Anyone know if the new version is going to allow "updates" rather than
re-installs when patches are released?

I installed this version and love it. Truly better than MS Office.
There are still some bugs in the database, but everything else works
better than I had expected.

Is there a site where I can post questions re. OpenOffice?
There's a variety of ways to get support. I find their mailing lists to
be very responsive. Check out http://support.openoffice.org/ to see the
options. Under the heading "User Mail List," there is a "subscribe"
linky to sign up for daily digests and the "archives" linky
which...well, is an archive of aforementioned!

Does anybody know when 2.0 final is due?

I seem to remember the official answer to that question being, "When it is
ready and not a moment before."

If you mean a newsgroup, there unfortunately isn't one. I tried to start
one, but failed. What you'll have to do is to go here:

http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/Join

and create an account with OpenOffice.org. Once you've done that, you
can interact in their forums:

Hmmm. I'm still waiting for them to come to their senses and drop the
inclusion of Java coding:

http://software.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=05/03/22/204244&tid=93

However, since Sun Microsystems is a huge sponsor of the program's
development:

I guess that won't be any time soon. Guess I'll keep using my commercial
software.

Sure there is. At news.gmane.org,
gmane.comp.openoffice.questions is, I believe, a bidirectional
port of the Users mailing list.

Why not use the StarOffice-groups? OpenOffice is on topic there (at least
in the german group)

It isn't open source, either, which is what everyone was led to believe
"Open" Office was supposed to be.

Well, the newsgroup is about freeware, and Java is free. Sometimes
people forget that this is a good thing already.

If you want open source Java, have a look at projects like Kaffe,
GNU Classpath or (the recently initiated) Apache Harmony. I don't
know how mature these projects are, but they're a reasonable
option if you want to go the fully open source Java route.

John,
Thanks for the link to the newsforge article. Although I only use Ooo on my
Linux box, I must confess, I had no idea the official distro copy was
crippled by the exclusion of Java, I use Ubuntu for my Linux box. What's
more is that I had no idea version 2.0 would be even more crippled by it's
exclusion. It was also interesting that the java used was not completely
compatable with the free options out there (GNU Compiler for Java) and
would require substantial reworking and GCJ updating to get it to work.

Personally I really don't care whethet or nto Java is used, but it should
be and remain for all time open source and free. As the Sun JRE is neither
of these by the F.O.S.S definition, it should be either excluded or altered
to be compatable with a free Java implemenatation.

Thanks again John

I think I installed over the top of the previous version; I was
expecting to be asked if I wanted to repair, but it just went ahead, and
seems OK. One point: by default Ooo version xyz defaults to installing
in directory OpenOffice_org_x_y_z or something on these lines. If you
plan to upgrade, change this to OpenOffice_2, and always use the same
directory. I'm not certain of any of this; I just try things and they
seem to work.

HTH,

I don't think so.
Java ain't God, but it ain't Satan either :-)

It also "ain't" open source either. Not only that, but having it on my
system has proven to be a security problem. I will continue to do
without it.

John -

FYI - OOo changing Java technology any time soon. I know a couple of
the OOo people (Daniel Carrera being one), word is, Java solves too many
problems for them. Adoption of Java is for the duration in OOo. Do
there you have it.

But come on. Java has security problems, but what doesn't nowadays?
It's a hell of a lot more secure than ActiveX, which happily runs around
on 90% of the systems out there, and God know what it's doing. At
least you can see when Java spawns a process, so good judgment and a
good firewall can keep a lot of this stuff out of your system. Not
being snide, just asking - isn't rejecting Java just a little TOO paranoid?
