opening xls files

Just for the heck of it....try changing the file extension from xls to xlr.
This has worked for me.

This is an Excel spreadsheet. Do you have Excel installed?
Neither Windows XP nor any other version of Windows has ever come
with Excel, nor with any other significant application software.

If you want Excel, you need to buy it, either alone, as part of
Microsoft Office.

Alternatively, if you just want to view xls files, and not create
or modify them, you can download a free Excel viewer at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...49-91DA-4110-8595-4A960D3E1C7C&displaylang=EN

Another alternative is to acquire a competing suite of Office
apps (most of which can handle Excel files) such as Corel Office,
StarOffice, or the freeware OpenOffice.
