Opening web files via ftp

Hi,

I have read that FP 2003 supports updating web sites via ftp.

Before I buy a copy, I'd just like to check if it is possible to edit and
save an individual web page.

Suppose my file can be located using ftp as follows:
ftp15.hostinguk.net/web/content/myhtml.htm

Is it possible to:
1) Open this file using Frontpage 2003
2) Make changes
3) Click the save button to put the file (including images) back on the
server.

Of course I realise and username/password will be required.

It's just that I've only seen details of using fp 2003 to edit complete web
sites rather than an individual page.

I have already achieved this via http and FPSEs but the latter is causing
problems on the web server with file permissions. So hence I'd like to
achieve the same thing with ftp/frontpage.

Many thanks in anticipation!

Regards,

Steve.

No, the remote server must have the FP extensions to do that. FP can be used to publish via FTP to a
server that doesn't have the FP extensions, but it can not let you work directly on the server via
FTP.

What kind of problems are you have with file permissions?

HI Thomas,

Thanks for the reply.
THat's exactly what I wnat to do, I must have explained things badly.

The problem is on an ISPs shared server. When FPSE's are installed they
cause seem to permissioning problem for unrelated files in other directories,
for example my vb.net components are unable to even read a text file.

So I would prefer to have FPSEs deinstalled and use FP via FTP.

So I guess you're saying that I can do it. But can it be done on an
indiviual file or would it jsut accept the web site?

Regards,

Steve

Without the extensions, you could use any FTP application, and with FP2003, I think you can upload a
single page to a FTP server.

I have not had any reason to try this or use FTP to upload pages, as all my projects must be hosted
on a Windows IIS server with the FP extensions installed, no exceptions allowed.

FTP is used to transfer files; hence File Transfer Protocol.

The Http: mode in Frontpage allows you to edit the frontpage web live on the
server and to transfer files; ftp allows only the transfer of files.

Http: mode requires the Server Extensions; FTP does not. If you use FTP
mode within Frontpage or any other FTP program, you risk corrupting the
server extensions and your host must reinstall them. For what you want to
do, and as long as your Frontpage web has no components requiring the server
extensions you can use FTP, otherwise use HTTP.

Yes, you need a "site" in Frontpage, but you can edit as few pages or as
many within that site (which is just a collection of web pages, but since
frontpage is a site management tool, it refers to a web as a "site".

It sounds like what you want is to "edit the site live" which requires the
server extensions to be activated - you say you've got problems with them, I
suggest you call your host to rectify that problem.

Otherwise you can work on your site/page locally, and just transfer the
files manually through the FTP in Frontpage itself or a third party program.

You can upload whatever you like with FTP mode in FP 2003 - what is the
restriction you've mentioned?

Andrew, re-read what I wrote, nowhere do I say anything about restrictions. I did however indicated
that I was not sure about uploading a single page via FTP with FP

Hi Thomas, Andrew,

Thanks for the replies.

I think I must have made things too confusing.

If you had a single html file (plus associated images) sitting in a
directory on a web server somewhere.

All I want to do it grab that page with FP (via ftp), edit it and save it.

FPSE presents problems in other ways. I have spoken for the last week with
my ISP. I only have a share on a web server and it seems that FPSE, when
installed, affects permissions on the whole site. But this is another
issue. I don’t care about FPSE if I can use FP/FTP.

Thanks once again for your help.

Steve

Sorry for the delay in replying by the way, it's late here in Europe :-)

Steve,

No extensions on live/remote server, then you can not open page on live/remote server for editing
directly in FP.

When viewing the page in IE, you can use File | Edit with FP, where you will be able to open and
edit the page, but you will not be able to save any changes back to the live/remote server, only
back to your local HD, and you will not have access to any other files on the live/remote server
while editing this page.

Thomas,

Your post (extract) says "Without the extensions, you could use any FTP
application, and with FP2003, I think you can upload a single page to a FTP
server."

I don't know what you meant by 'uploading a *single page* to an FTP server',
but in my experience (using FTP mode in FP 2003) you can use it as you would
as you would any external FTP program.

Then to edit that page you would :

File > Open > Site and specify the site to open; then

File > Open > Page and select the page to edit. It will open with all the
images on that page.

Make your changes; save the file, then publish the changed page through the
aforementioned methods (http: mode in Frontpage, ftp program or ftp mode in
Frontpage).

Or if you mean open a page live on the server (as I've said already, this
requires the server extensions) goto your browser (Internet Explorer) and
click "Edit with Frontpage", put in your logon details and the site will
open.

The "Edit with..." button is only a feature in IE as far as I know.

I know that you can upload with any version of FP via FTP, I am not sure about the ability to
publish a single page via FTP in FP2003, that is what I was indicating by saying that I think you
can.

Trevor,

Thank you for clarifying the issue, as I was not sure if you could upload selected files via FP's
FTP mode.

THanks for the replies.

OK So just to confirm I've understood correctly, server extensions are
required no matter what means you save files back to the server. Even if I
were to use ftp, server extensions are still required.

That's a shame, I was hoping it might be the work around I'm looking for.

Steve.
