Internet Explorer Opens a Blank Page with a Placeholder
Icon Instead of a .pdf File in Adobe Acrobat Reader

This is the only link that I could find on the Microsoft
website about a problem that has recently popped up on my
computer. I'm running WinXP, IE6 and when I click on
a .pdf link, all I get is the little box with a red "X"
in it. I can do a right click and save target as onto my
desk top, but I didn't used to have to do this and it's
very inconvenient. Anybody have this problem and/or know
what to do to fix it? Thanks.

I have the same problem Robert, sent a post last night ("Cannot open .pdf
files in IE", Monday, April 26, 2004 8:39 PM). No reply so far. Hopefully
somebody out there can help it may be a common problem!

See if this helps...
Right Click on the file and see if "Open with Acrobat x.x"
(x = your acrobat version) appears at the top of the pop
up window. If it doesn't select "Open with" > "Choose
Program" and select Adobe Acrobat x.x > OK

That should solve the problem if Windows doesn't know what
program it should be using to open the file with.

Thanks for the suggestion Jim. That does not help. I have the file type
association (.pdf) associated with the Acrobat Reader. It works fine if a
double click on any .pdf file on my hard disk. The problem is if a double
click on a pdf file URL on a web page within IE.
It works on other machines just not this one.
Suggestions please?

If it is only .pdf files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=303401

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.pdf

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
(QuickTime by the looks of it and if so, I believe they have a fix)
The key does not normally exist.
