opening port 3389

Hi everyone (Al especially),

You said this to me before...
Call your home PC using the public IP of the PC or if your
behind a firewall/NAT/router the public
IP of that device. Forward TCP Port 3389 through the
firewall/NAT/router to the home PCs LAN IP
address. Note that if your at work and trying to connect
to home its possible your work system
administrators may have blocked TCP Port 3389 outbound.

I'm still waiting to hear from our network people, but can
you point me in a direction that tells me HOW to do this--
to forward TCP port 3389 through the firewall/NAT/router
of the home PC's LAN IP address? And when you say IP
address, you're not referring to the simple names we've
used, but an actual address...i.e. 185.99.0.2 (totally not
accurate, but I mean numbers, instead of the name we gave
the computer)?

I do know the public address of the router...I'm just
feeling rather confused. I don't know how one does this
everyday.

Well, first we should keep this in one thread...but...

What manufacturer/model router do you have at home? Check the support pages for your router and look
for "Port Forwarding" or "Virtual Servers" or something like that. Configure to forward TCP Port
3389 to the private LAN IP of your home PC. Note you should be using a static IP on your home PC
simply because if you reboot/restart the home PC the private LAN IP assigned can change. That
effectively negates your port forwarding configuration.

If your home ISP assigns public IP addresses dynamically, look at No-IP.com which maps an alias
(usually of your choice) to a DHCP assigned IP address. A small program runs on your PC and contacts
the No-IP.com servers on a periodic basis. The server then maps the IP of your PC to the alias and
propagates that over the public internet. It works very well for me and its FREE.... Go to
http://www.no-ip.com for help. Additional like services, some FREE and some $$$$, can be found on
this page...

Call your home PC, from your office location, using the alias...

Oh...enjoy your "Trick or Treating" tonight with your kids...:)
