Opening msWord (2003) always generates a blank window. (Even if I reinstall msWord!)

msWord (Office 2003) under WindowsXP Pro.

Hi

Problem: Whenever I open msWord it always opens a *blank window* as
well as
opening msWord itself! Why?!

I tried Detect & Repair - no good.
I tried running Error-checking on the hard disk (involving a complete
reboot)...
I tried running "sfc /scannow"...
I even tried UN-installing msWord completely and reinstalling it!

NOTHING seems to help.

In some ways this doesnt matter - I just have to keep closing this
stupid blank
window that shows up whenever I open msWord (even if I click directly
on
the application - winword.exe)

This is entire PC is less than 1 month old so this is worrying...

- Do I have a corrupted Window Registry?

- If so what can I do about it?!

Any help appreciated

Sorry - no you dont undersand - it suddenly has started to open an
entire *window* that is absolutly blank.

(FWIW, it occupies the whole screen area as if maximised but is
absolutely blank with no buttons, no menus nothing. And it even
appears in the task bar... The only thing you can do to it is close
it.)

Okay thanks - I have deleted normal.dot
And when I ran "winword.exe -a" yes, it worked! No extra window.

But then when I try and open winword in any other route it goes back to
the
original problem - 2 windows open.

But I dont want to open Word like that every time!

So then I tried making a link to windword.exe
but I cant get the link to accept the parameter "-a"...
What is the "-a" parameter? What does it do?

Meanwhil I have found a similar problem. When I open
control/F to find something, I get that stupid blank
background again. So basically I cant find anything!

Any further thoughts?

Starts Word with default settings.

Could be a macro virus. Not sure why it would effect Ctrl-F though.

Nope not a virus it seems!

In the end I had to get hold of MicroSoft and use up one of my JUST TWO
support calls that I'm allowed to make to MS. For once they were very
switched on and managed to sort out the problem. Though by his own
admission the Support Engineer had no idea how he had actually done
it!! Though I can tell you he went into the registry and renamed
something called "word" to "word1". Bit of a friggin mystery but the
problem doesnt seem to have come back yet...
