Opening Links in New Windows

K

Kavir

Hello, anytime I try to do this with IE 6.0, my computer freezes for a
while and then comes back to the original page. I tried rebooting and
scanning for viruses but with no success. Can anyone help me?

Hi Kavir :)

You might try the following and see if it will help:

For opening links in a new window:

Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab>uncheck 'reuse windows for launching
shortcuts'

also..

Yahoo installations have been known to cause this problem. If you have Yahoo
toolbar disable it, or if you have Yahoo Companion, uninstall it. See here:
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#new_window

If you have any popup blocker programs, disable them and try again.

also...

Courtesy of Frank Saunders -

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

3. Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded.

4. If that doesn't fix it, see this article:

http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#new_window

5. If you are using WinXP try this:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/IE_Default_Browser.reg

You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC (msconfig for WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk' ("Expand File" for WinXP).
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which is
probably in the Win98 (i386 for WinXP) folder of your installation CD-ROM
(typically D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs (Windows\i386 for
WinXP) folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System (C:\Windows\System32
for WinXP), and click OK. System File Checker (or msconfig) looks for the
file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has been
successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot

Hope this helps :)

Not sure any of the suggestions below will fix your problem, but if I were
in your situation I would certainly want to rule these possibilities.

Run Ad-Aware SE Personal (first) and SpyBot-Search & Destroy (second).
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

After you install each, you should click update before running. For example,
with Ad-Aware click on the link "Check for updates now" on the first screen
that appears after you launch the application.

Also, I would install the CWShredder (zip file) to get some of the most
nasty malware:
The CWShredder direct download is at :
http://aumha.org/downloads/cwshredder.zip

Once you unzip the file and launch cwshredder.exe, simply click the FIX
button.

Hi Kavir :)
Thank you very much for your help but I have tried every single thing
that you have posted and still, it is not able to work. I am so
frustrated.

In view of the fact that you have tried all the normal fixes for this
problem and it persists, it is very likely that your problem is indeed, as
Michael suggests, some type of scumware on your system that is causing this
problem. If the cleaning procedures outlined by Michael do not resolve the
problem then I suggest that you repair IE.

As you have yet not mentioned what version of Windows you are using, I'll
provide the repair information for WIndows 2000 and XP. If that is the OS
you are using please post the version of Windows you have.

You will need to uninstall any post IE6-SP1 Win2K SPs before you
uninstall/reinstall IE. You will also have to go to the Windows Update and
reinstall all the necessary updates after the reinstall.

Hope this helps :)

So James, have you tried any of the steps that Jan II and I have suggested.
For example, running Ad-Aware SE, Spybot, CWShredder and/or making an effort
to 'repair' IE6?

See if these commands help, from Start/Run:

regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 /i urlmon.dll

Restart Windows.

Additional recommendations:

Disable all Pop-up blockers if installed any. Here is a detailed note from
Don Varnau, MS-MVP Internet Explorer

<quote>
You probably have a program running which is blocking pop-up windows-
something like Yahoo Companion, Google toolbar, MSN toolbar, a firewall,
Earthlink (or another) pop-up blocker, MyIE2 (or another shell for IE) etc.

You'll have to turn off the feature that's blocking new windows or, perhaps,
uninstall the program.

BHO Demon from http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm may find the
offending program/BHO.

Or it could be caused by spyware/parasites. Work through the solutions
(CWShredder, Ad-aware, Spybot) at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm Also note the security tips on that
page.

You'd be interested in using my program ToolbarCop to disable the IE add-ons
(that includes browser extensions, toolbars, additional buttons to the
standard toolbar, Browser Helper Objects) selectively, to isolate the
problem. ToolbarCop can be downloaded from:

You did every single thing in two hours? Well done.

Did you review all the advice at this URL?

Do you have Office 2000 installed? Any anti-advertisement or anti-spyware
software? Any other internet related software? You may even have a corrupt
cache.

This one of interesting. It found Java Bytever.A, Bytever.C,
Bytever.K. I deleted them by running my system in safe mode and
disabling system restore but it still isn't working! It did work in
safe mode though which should give me a clue.

With this problem, it is also difficult for me to download files as
sometimes the pop up freezes the computer.

I am running Windows XP Home Edition version.

That is very strange as I have never known of running Ad-Aware to cause any
problems.
I tried SpyBot as you said and it found a few harmful files.

Here's what I would do.

Go to the Control Panel and select System (or right-click My Computer and
select Properties.)

Select the System Restore tab and turn off System Restore.

Boot in Safe mode and run Ad-aware and Spybot again. Also any antivirus
program you have installed. I never use Safe Mode with networking. But if
you are able to use the online virus scanner I recommended so much the
better.

Don't forget to turn System Restore back on when you're done.

I see you have already done some testing in Safe Mode.

Given all your problems with Spyware and viruses I am wondering if you are
new to XP and might be better served to have a friend who is very savvy with
XP come over and help you out. I don't ever mean to be patronizing. It is
just that when I find a computer this damaged with one of my clients it is
usually because they are new to XP - or they let their teenage kids have
unabated access to Kaaza, Instant Messaging, running IE with cookies
enabled, etc.

Finally I cannot remember if you have run System File Checker or Windows
Update recently.

Yes! Thank you very much. This program did the trick but it wasn't
simple as that. BHO Demon found a BHO that was linked to the file
req.dat found as C:\Windows\System32\req.dat. I ticked on the disable
option but the dialog box wouldn't go away when I clicked on OK. So, I
decided to do some research on the file. It seems as though it is a
fairly new file that is going around that renders the option of
opening links in a new window and some downloads that require a pop
up, useless while freezing your computer for a while. I downloaded a
program that would delete this req.dat on reboot since it was then
being used by the operating system and couldn't be deleted so simply.
It is working for me now but if I'm experiencing any other problems, I
will let you all know...thank you all for your help.

Glad you finally solved this Kavir.

You mentioned your research of req.dat (and presumably req.dll). Did you
notice that at least one poster stated the following?

****
The files req.dat and req.exe combine to form a keyboard trojan and hook
into your logon and logoff events. I recommend that you should also change
your PC password and all your internet bank passwords immediately AFTER you
have deleted these two culprits (req.dat, req.exe).
