opening .htm file

William B. Lurie

In XP... .htm files used to open whenever I
found them with Windows Explorer. Now they open and show
me the .htm code, not the result. All I did that I know
of in between was install Plus! XP. How do I tell it
(I use Mozilla for my browser)......? Thanks

Right click on the htm file and do choose
Open With > Choose Program...> then choose your browser
from the list and check 'Always use the selected...',
click OK and your set. If your browser is not there click
browse and search for the program file. Hope this help. =)

Thank you, KN. I did all that, and when I close it with "OK",
the window shows up saying "Cannot find file f:\xxx.htm",
but when close THAT, the file that it said it couldn't find,
pops right out. So it lied.

Then when I start all over, and repeat the right click on the same
file, again it says it will try to open it with Notepad instead
of Mozilla which I just told it to use, including the ALWAYS box.
What I didn't do is a complete restart, but I'd be surprised if that
would help. At least I can open my file, but what do I have to do
to make the 'always' take?

Now, after all the above, and checking each statement of how it
performs, and restarting several times, I can state that I have a
stable, repeatable system, opening the file each time using Mozilla,
but still malfunctioning. The malfunction is two fold:

One is that it says it can't find the file, but when I close that
window, and close the panel showing all the files as icons, the
..htm file I asked for opens up beautifully using Mozilla.

The other malfunction is that when I go back to check using "open with"
it still shows Notepad, and I can't make it remember that I have checked
the "Always open with...." box. But it half way remembers it because
it DOES open it with Mozilla!!

It's broken, and I'd like to fix it, but I can live with it, if it's
unfixable.

Check within Mozilla's options for the ability to make it the Default browser. If it exists, set it. If its already set, disable it, save your settings, then re-enable it, and save your settings.

Bill,

Maybe you can obliterate this issue, e.g. stop trying to figure how
*why* it's wrong but let the computer fix itself, by letting Mozilla do
a new install where it will reset everything.

Now is a an opportune time as Version 1.6 has become available (free, of
course) at www.mozilla.org.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Rob, I took the opportunity to install Mozilla 1.6 about a
week ago. I have no objection to installing it again. The
install of 1.6 after 1.5 had been running 2 months was
quick and easy. The reason I might care about *why* is more
to help others, including the MOZ implimenters. I'd be
satisfied just to have a procedure to get it back the way
it was in 1.5, and the way it was (I think) in 1.6 until
this glitch appeared. Shall I just install 1.6 again, as
though it were an update from 1.5??

Bill,

I'm sorry, I don't know. All I know is that I have Mozilla 1.6 running
(recently installed). I have no problems like you describe. My hunch
is that reinstalling will reset the appropriate registry settings to
make things work better. I've yet to figure out why people have so many
problems with file associates (My theory is that fiddling is getting in
the way, but I don't know).

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Sorry, Rob. I reinstalled 1.6 and accepted all options in the
simplest way. The only question it asked this time was whether
I wanted to set Mozilla as my default browser. It still acts
as described, in that it opens the .htm file but I have to
close out an error window and another window, and there it
is. If anything changes, I'll report back.

Bill,

Just to confirm ... adjusting file associations in Explorer doesn't fix it?

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Rob, I just checked again. Performance is as I described....and
all file associations that look like they refer to HTM have
the Mozilla emblem on them. And it does open them with
Mozilla, but has the two-sidestep-glitch in between. Re-
installing 1.6 on top of already in place 1.6 didn't change
that. And I don't think it's inherent in 1.6 because I'd have
seen it before now. Well, it came, and it may go away. You
know, "The Lord Giveth, and ......".
