opening files saved in Windows 95 and 98 using Windows XP

I have Open Office on my machine now that I use for my spreadsheets and text
documents and I am trying to open previously saved files saved while using a
Windows 95 and also 98 operating system. Now that I've upgraded to Windows
XP, I can't open those files. It states the disk needs to be formatted. How
can I open these files that I need? I'd appreciate any help anyone can give
me.

What am I doing wrong?

The first thing you're doing wrong is posting a question about three
different Windows versions and Open Office in a Word newsgroup.

Other than that, I have no clue. I've been able to open OLD floppies in my
Win XP system. My first thought is that the floppies have degraded and your
data is lost but I could be wrong.
