convert from Word 95 doc version

I have some Word documents last edited in 1988 which are saved in Word 95/97
format (I think). I am now using Word 2007 and opening these old files gives
encoding options that do not display any text. Does anybody have any
suggestions how to convert these old files? Can I download ancient versions
of Word somewhere? Many thanks, Pieter

If they were "last edited in 1988" they can't be Word 95/97 format - they
would have to be a much earlier vintage than that:) The necessary converters
still may be available but have been long since dropped from the standard
package.

You might first try what's available from MVP Graham Mayor's site (near
bottom of page):

If they don't work for you there is a commercial program by the name of
Conversion Plus from DataViz (US $49.95) which may do the trick... but I
don't think there is a free trial:

Graham - Thanks for the note - wasn't sure, but thought it maight be worth a
try... especially if the OP pursues the option of obtaining access to an
earlier version of Word.

If not, I believe conversiion Plus "should" handle it.
