Opening files in XP is slow

M

Mike B.

I have a PC running Windows XP Pro SP2 with a GB of RAM. Whenever I
try to open a file directly off the desktop or from a folder, it takes
a little over a minute to open up. If I open Word, and then open the
file within Word, it opens within seconds. At first I thought it was
an Office 2003 issue, but the same thing is happening with Adobe
Acrobat. I tried turning off the AV, disabling spyware, and running
HiJack this. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Mike

as part of the comparative
analysis you can also test
word in safemode.

also word can be opened
in windows normal mode
by holding down the
ctrl key as you start
word.

Whenever the PC responds in an abnormal way, you want to check
the Event logs for any errors that may be logged. Explorer can act
like you describe due to 3rd-Party context add-ons. You may want
to download and run Shell Ext Viewer to see what has been added
to extend Explorer's capabilities.

You didn't mention what security apps you use. Some of them will
cause excessive system loading and might be hooking into explorer
operations causing the delay.
*You'd also want to make sure the computer is Malware free.
