Opening files at Excel startup

M

Mike Hines

I have set Excel to go to a directory file containing a mix of excel and
quatro pro files, and folders with excel and quatro pro files in them.
Suddenly, every time I startup excel, it attempts to open all of the
"loose" excel and quatro pro files in the directory. This forces me to
have to wade through a list of error messages regarding incompatible
formats, etc.

This started after I attempted to translate a quatro pro file into
excel and was asked to insert my Office XP CD as I was attempting to
use a feature that was not yet on my machine. Ever since, I have had
this problem. I have temporarily reset my excel startup file to be the
earliest directory that contains no "loose" spreadsheet files.
Reinstalling office XP did not help.

Any help would be appreciated.

XL will attempt to open any file found in the Startup directory or
the Alternate startup directory. AFAIK, you can't change that
behavior - you'll need to remove the QP files.

Use Tools / Options / General / Default File Location to set a starting
directory for Excel to look in for files you open regularly. It will also
initially give you this as a saving location.
