Opening Excel

I'm running Office 97 on XP SP2 and every time I open a file I get the
following message. A document with the name *.xls is already open. I have no
other .xls files open can anyone give me some advice please.

Make sure there are no hidden workbooks (window>>unhide) if not it may be to
do with the way you are opening files. Has anyone done anything with file
associations on your machine? It sounds like Excel is trying to open the wb
twice.
You can try this

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.
