opening downloads

I have downloaded a number of files from the internet to my A drive. They are
all labelled "internet shortcut". When I attempt to open them I get the
message that the file does not have a program associated with it and that I
should create an association in the Folder Options control panel. This, I do
not seem to be able to do.

When I check "help" for associating files and programs, it tells me to find
the file, right click and then click "open with" or "open". Since I don't see
"open with", I click "open" and I get the same message about not having an
associated program.

I seem to be going in circles. Can anyone help, please>?

I am having the same problem as the person who posted this message. I just
tried the link Ramesh posted above but every time i try to use any of the
app. it says that "registry editing has been disabled by your administrator"
can any one help me? oh yeah and the one of the files I was tring to open is
a "rar" file do u know how i can open that file?

..rar files needs WinRar or WinAce:
http://shell.windows.com/fileassoc/0409/xml/redir.asp?Ext=rar

For the registry restrictions message, this happens if the DisableRegistryTools policy is enabled in the system. If that's not the case, many malware products enable this restriction, so it's a better idea to cleanup the system. Run these tools

1. Lavasoft Ad-Aware - http://www.lavasoftusa.com
2. SpyBot Search & Destroy - http://www.safer-networking.org
3. CWShredder 2.0 - http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

Update 1 & 2 before running a scan.

From the zip file list you sent, I downloaded "URL File Association Fix" to
my C drive. It shows up as "xp_url_shortcut_fix".

The instructions say to open it and extract the REG file to my hard disk. I
opeed the file and clicked "extract all files".

The screen then ased me to select a folder to extract files to. I entered
C:\program files and clicked "next". I get a message trhat says "no files to
extract".

Stan,

Re-download it. It does contain a REG file within.
