Opening Attachments - Again

When I attempt to open a .doc attachment, I am told the file has no
association and I should create one in 'Set associations Control Panel' I
can't
find this control panel. The attachment window is not providing the familiar
'open as' option but I can save the .doc and then open it as a word document.
however i want to be able to open it directly from 'mail' as I used to to do
with 'outlook'. Can anyone help?
Thanks

Open Control panel
Choose Classic view
Open Default programs
Choose second option (default progs for specified file types)
Scroll down to .doc
Say you want to change it and keep asking for more progs and files to be
open until you eventually get WINWORD offered. Make WINWORD the default.
Open Mail and make sure it works.
