Opening an existing Word document

I am trying to open an existing Word document and I get a
message, "Winword.exe has generated errors and will be
closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.
An error log has been generated." How do I fix this
problem? This only happens when I'm trying to open a Word
document. I am using the Microsoft 2000 version.
