Opening an Excel file

I'm using Windows XP Home and Office 97. When I open an
Excel file from the file icon, I get a message stating
that the file is already open and that a second file of
the same name cannot be opened. There is NO open file to
begin with. Microsoft Word files can be opened with no
problems.
