Opening Access 97 version after installing Access 2003

Hello, I have just installed Access 2003 runtime on a pc and have opened the
Access 2003 mde successfully. When I try to open a Access 97 file that has
not been converted yet, I get the following error "A system error occurred,
or there isn't enough free memory to start the Microsoft Access. Close the
unneeded programs and try again.

I'm sure that I have enough memory, Does this mean that I can't run the
access 97 file anymore?

Thanks

Right, You can't open Access 97 MDE file in Access 2003 runtime. MDE files
opend only in the same version of access and you can't open them with any
other version.

If you haven't done this already, try opening Access 97 and navigating to the file.
Do you get the same error?

I use the runtime version of access on these machines. I have two shortcuts
on the machine. The first one points to the 2003 exe that has a path to the
2003 mde, the second one points to the 97 exe that has a path to the 97 mde.

IF I have Access 97 installed and navigate to the file, this probably would
fix the issue, but really isn't an option to tell all the users to not use
the shortcut but open access directly, also I don't have unlimited licensees
to put access 97 on all the machines.

I plan to converted the other files to 2003 and just not use 97 anymore.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Then you need to put the path to the correct MSAccess.exe in the
TARGET proerty of the shortcut ... like this ...

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\MSAccess.exe" "C:\YourApp\YourFile.mdb"

This will force the use of the correct version of Access.

That's what I do, but since I installed Access 2003, I get the memory error
when running the access 97 file.

ok

so

open up your sendto directory, and put a shortcut to msaccess.exe for
access97 and access2003

it's the only way i can keep them straight

i just woudl reccomend never ever installing more than one version on
one machine

I would install the ms-access, and jet update for a97...

There is a know bug that if you have over a 1 gig of ram, it fails....

The updates to office 97 do fix this problem...and might do it for you...

This is a long shot..as I don't recall installing a2003 being a problem to
the above....
