Opening a message, tries to connect to Internet

I use Outlook98 (Internet Mail only) (with WinXP Pro) and
process most of my e-mail when I'm not connected to the
Internet. Some incoming messages have links in them;
when I open such messages, they trigger something that
makes my computer begin to dial-up to connect to
Internet. Is there some setting to prevent it from doing
this? I've never been able to find anything in Outlook
nor in IE (6.0.2800).

There are add-ins that will disable the HTML tags that are trying to connect
to the INternet. See if Chilton Preview Pane (google it) will do for you.
Later versions of Outlook have the ability to not preview the HTML (2003)
and 2000 and 2002 have add-ins to allow viewing of all messages in plain
text.
