Opengl issues with xp home

G

Guest

Hi
Every application that uses opengl will crash my computer either to the desktop or will restart my machine completely.
I have tried both nVIdia and ATI cards with the newest drivers. I have updated all possible drivers from motherboard
to sound card. Medal of Honor with and without patch, Quake 3, Quake 3 Arena, and even Roller Coaster Tycoon
crash my computer. I also have an Opengl bechnmarking program called GLExcess that i use. The benchmarking
program will run a couple of tests then restart my computer.

I have reinstalled all the games more than a few times as well as the operating system XP Home with all updates
installed.

I have read about many people with the same problem so if you can help me you will be helping thousands!
Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

System info.

Motherboard
Gigabyte GA-7RXP ver.2.0

Ram
Kingston 256 Mb 2700 333MHZ (fully tested and fine)

Video cards tried
MSI/Microstar MX-400D-T64

Gigabyte GV-R92S128T Raedon 9200

PowerColor Evil Commando RV25A-C3 ATI Raedon 9000

Sound Card
Onboard sound Creative Sound Blaster PCI128 (WDM)

Thanks in advance.

BigWreck,

The first thing I would recommend doing is to disable the auto-reboot
feature of Windows XP and see if Windows XP gives you any blue-screen
errors.

To disable auto-restart:
Click on START->CONTROL PANEL->SYSTEM, click the ADVANCED tab on the System
Properties window, then click the SETTINGS button in the STARTUP AND
RECOVERY section.
In the Startup And Recovery window, there is a check-box in the SYSTEM
FAILURE section that reads AUTOMATICALLY RESTART. Uncheck that box, then
close the windows back to your desktop.

After doing this, run one of these games and try to make the error occur
again. If get an error message, write down what it says on a piece of
paper, reboot the system and post the error message in a reply to this
newsgroup. If you could include a copy of your DXDiag text, that would also
help us to work with you on this issue.

To reply with a dxdiag text:
Click on Start -> Run and type 'dxdiag' in the run box, then click 'Ok'.
When the DirectX Diagnostic Tool window appears you will see tabs across the
top click each tab and run the diagnostic tests on each. Then click the
'Save All Information' button, which will create a text file on your system
where you specify, as in My Documents or Desktop. Open that text file, copy
the contents and paste it to a reply.

BigWreck,

After looking through your DXDiag, I can see a couple of specific items to
comment on:

1) Make sure you have the latest Via 4-in-1 drivers for your system -
http://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers/4in1/VIA_Hyperion 4IN1_V451v.zip.
Looking at EA's website, I found several articles related to random crashes
on systems with Via chipsets.

2)There is a newer driver update for your sound card at
http://files.americas.creative.com/manualdn/Drivers/Others/1843/SBPCI_WebDrv
sV5_12_01.exe which might help.

If you are still encountering this issue after trying these options, reply
back with a new post of your DXDiag text and this time please include the
section listing
------------------
DirectX Components
------------------

And also look to see if you have any items listed under
------------------------------------
Inactive Display Entries in Registry
------------------------------------

or

I opened my case and placed a fan blowing into it, that seemed to cure my problem

I added the other Via drivers, but the sound card drivers wouldn't load

I sent all the information that was available in the diagnostic program. Maybe I'm not doing something right

BigWreck,

System overheating is becoming a more serious problem all the time on
computers. It can cause all kinds of strange behavior that is difficult to
narrow down. My best advice would be to leave your case open, buy a small
clip-fan to circulate air, and keep you system in a well-ventilated area
away from heating vents.

As to the sound drivers not installing, if everything is working, don't
worry about the drivers. If you are encountering issues with sound in games
or in Windows in general, try to download and install the drivers again.

If you need any further help, please post a reply and we'll see if we can
help out.
