'Open With' Not Appearing

If I do a shift/right-click on certain file types (mpg, mpeg, exe, jpg)
I do not get the 'open with' option in the selection list. I'm running
XP Pro, logged on as Administrator. I tried adding them in the file
types box, without any success.

How can I correct this?

Thanks for any help.

Wes,

Thanks for the note, but neither file solved the problem. I notice the
problem with mpg and mpeg files (might be others as well) and I cannot
select them in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT (.mpg, .mpeg, etc.) section using
REGEDIT. I get 'Error Opening Key...' when trying. Is there a way to
delete these keys outside of REGEDIT?

This is probably related: I use SeaMonkey as browser and mail and every
time I open the mail window it asks if I want to make it the default.
I check 'always use this' and yes, but it asks every time.

Thanks very much for any insight,
Bill

Bill,
REGEDIT. I get 'Error Opening Key...' when trying.

This is usually caused by a Permissions problem. See below.
Is there a way to delete these keys outside of REGEDIT?

Yes, there is, but it probably won't help because of the Permissions
problem.

The easiest thing to do would be to restore the mpg file association.

Go here...

Windows® XP File Association Fixes
Copyright 2003 - Doug Knox
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

Read the instructions. Then get...

MPG/MPEG File Association Fix (Restores default associations for MPG/MPEG
files)

If you have some 3rd party media player it may have added a NoOpenWith
value.

[[NoOpenWith. If a registry string with this value is present, this
application is excluded from the Open With dialog box list. This value has
no data associated with it.]]

Reboot after using Doug's fix.

SeaMonkey? Where do come up with these stupid names?

You are an Administrator aren't you?

Try this...
Reset the registry permissions
As soon as you have found the registry subkey that has the incorrect
permissions, update the permissions for that subkey.

To update the permissions of the registry subkey, follow these steps:
a. Click Start, click Run, type regedit and then click OK to start
Registry Editor.
b. Locate and right-click the registry subkey:
and then click Permissions.
c. Under Group or user names, click Administrators.
d. Under Permissions for Administrators, make sure that the Allow check box
for the following entries is selected:
* Full Control
* Read
e. Click Apply and then click OK.
f. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.

Open the Registry Editor again and see if you can access the key now.

If not, try this...
Start | Run | Type: regedit | OK |
Navigate to >>>
the said key
Right click the key in the left hand pane | Permissions... | Advanced
button | Owner tab | click the new owner and then click OK.

[[You can take ownership of a registry key if you are logged on as an
administrator or if you have been specifically assigned the permission to
take ownership of the registry key by the current owner. ]]

See permissions, registry in Registry Editor HELP. Or see these...

Wes,

I had already tried the MPG File Association fix, no luck. Yes, I have
Administrator rights. With all these problems, I think I'll just
reinstall XP and start fresh.

Thanks again for your help,
Bill

Have fun.

I do not know which one or if both are needed.

220. Restore Open With on the Right Click

openwithrestore.reg is the file.

241. Right hand side
Restore Choose Program - Open With

chooseprogramrestore.reg is the file.
