File Association/Add program to open with list

Dell 8300 Windows XP Pro (OEM) Jasc Paint Shop Photo
Album 5.

I am trying to associate .JPG and .BMP files with Jasc
Paint Shop Photo Album 5. I want JPSPA5 to open
either .BMP or .JPG files when I double click on a .BMP
or .JPG file.
I have successfully associated .JPG files with PSPA5.
When trying to associate .BMP files with JPSPA5 I go
to:MY Computer; My documents; My pictures; Jasc Paint
Shop Photo Album files; right click on XXXXXXXX.BMP and I
have tried it by right clicking then selecting Open With
or Properties, Change;either way, then Browse because
JPSPA5.EXE is not on the RECOMMENDED or Other Programs
menus, so I browse to C:\program files\Jasc
Software\Paintshop Photo Album 5\then highlighting
JPSPA.EXE; OPEN. When it returns to the
OPEN WITH window JPSPA.EXE is NOT in either the
RECOMMENDED or OTHER PROGRAMS lists. JPSPA5.EXE cannot be
associated because JPSPA5.EXE was not added to the
Recommended or Other Programs list. Can Jasc Paint Shop
Photo Album 5 (JPSPA5.EXE) be added to either the
Recommended Programs or Other Programs lists? Am I
missing something?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. This is
driving me nuts (short trip). Thank you.

Did you check: Always use the selected program to open this kind of file
??

[[Specifies that the next time you open this file, or any other file having
the same file name extension, you want Windows to use the program that you
specify here.]]

When I browse to change opening program and select
JPSPA5.EXE then select open, JPSPA5.EXE does not appear
on the open with RECOMMENDED or OTHER PROGRAMS list.
If I select PROPERTIES to accesss a change there is a
CHECK in the ALWAYS USE.. BOX, but it is grayed out and
will not let me uncheck the box. If I access through OPEN
WITH there is not a CHECK in the ALWAYS USE.. BOX, but
either way when I browse to JPSPA5.EXE, then highlight
and then open is selected JPSPA5.EXE does not move to the
OPEN WITH, RECOMMENDED PROGRAMS or OTHER PROGRAMS lists.

Try disabling the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and see what happens.

Disable Windows Picture and Fax Viewer

By default, Windows XP opens all picture files (gif,jpg,...) with the
included Windows Picture and Fax Viewer no matter what other picture viewers
you have installed. To disable the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer,
unregister shimgvw.dll. This can be done from command prompt:
regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll

(Additional note: unregistering shimgvw.dll will also disable thumbnail view
in Explorer and may cause problems changing user account and desktop
background pictures. To reenable Picture and Fax viewer again type:
regsvr32 shimgvw.dll)

I tried disabling the Windows Picture and FAX Viewer,
nope still no go. I uninstalled some of the applications
on the Recommended and Other lists. Then I tried, nope no
go. I uninstalled/reinstalled Jasc Paint Shop Photo
Album, nope no go. So, either it is a Registry problem
which I have limited knowledge or Jasc Paint Shop Photo
Album 5 itself has a problem. Thank you for the help. If
I get it fixed or resolved I'll drop a post for the
knowledge base and curious.
