open with list

When trying to open a file using the 'open with...' list (right-click on
file, choose program to open with), nothing happens. I have had this problem
only recently. The last time was with a *.txt file. I choose MS Word from
the 'open with..' list, but the file won't open. MS Word documents (*.doc)
will open by choosing any program in the list.

Any idea why the text files won't open with Word using the open with list?
