"open with" in XP Pro Sp3

Can I modify the standard "open with" menu when a file is right clicked on
? I have two versions of an Adobe program with the same name
'fireworks.exe' . For some reason when installed the new version of FWs is
the only new program in the Adobe suite that didn't register in the "open
with" right click menu's ? I'm thinking because it has the same program exe
name ?

I'd prefer not to delete the older fireworks app...

Any way to delete the old Fireworks.exe and replace it with the new
fireworks.exe in the right click menu ?

Thanks, Tim

All exe files would open in Windows XP SP3 if and only if that is your
operating system. You don't have to do anything. what exactly are you
trying to do and what on screen messages are you getting?.

Have you got shortcut links on your start menu or on your desktop? If
so then I can't see any problems.

Please explain yourself properly.

You may have to register. Do it. The site sends no crap mail and the
articles range from great to excellent.

Hi Tim,

That should be possible. What I'd try, is this:

- right-click a Fireworks data file and choose "Open with ..."
- the "Open with" dialogue box appears, with the old Fireworks app
selected as "Recommended Programs".
- click the Browse button
- navigate to the latest version of Fireworks.exe (CS4?)
- click OK to select that EXE
- check the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file"
checkbox.

This will associate the document with the more recent Fireworks, instead
of the older version.

Caveat: I haven't tried this with Fireworks specifically, but it
certainly works for other applications.

Hope it helps,

Andrew

Contact Adobe Support. While you're at it, ask if it's safe to open a file
in the older version, too.

Thanks guys...strangest thing...I have had this newer suite for over four
months and FW CS4 would never come up on the right click-open with
window...only FW MX2004. Yes...no problem with both versions on same system
as long as both are not open at the same time.

Prior to posting I was trying to get this to work...renamed the 2004 version
and copied CS4 version to old folder...nothing happened except a can not
open error.. Changed everything back.

When I went now to retry some of your suggestions...Voila...CS4 version now
appears on top of the open with programs ?

Haven't a clue as to what happened...But glad it did...

Thanks
