I was using Macromedia Fireworks MX, but this year I upgraded to Fireworks
MX 2004. Today I finally decided to uninstall the older edition since the
2004 edition works without problems.
I've since learned that my file associations have changed, and Windows XP
Pro no longer seems to recognize that I have Fireworks MX 2004. Previously
if I right-clicked on an image file, in the right context menu would appear
an option to "edit with Fireworks". Not only is that gone, but if I pan
down to "open with" in the right-click context menu, Fireworks isn't on the
list.
Worse, when I went into the file associations manager and attempted to
correct this, I couldn't. Each time I tried to associate a file type with
Fireworks, even *.png, which is the Fireworks native file format, the file
association manager wouldn't accept the change. For the moment at least, if
I want to open a file with Fireworks, I have to launch the application from
the Start menu and then open the file from Fireworks file menu.
I read what the Microsoft database had on the right-click context menu, but
none of it was helpful. That was before I learned that I couldn't even
associate Fireworks MX 2004 with any file types. With the problems I've
been having today, cleaning my system of spyware and BHO's, and trying to
run traceroutes on a couple websites I suddenly cannot connect to, I'm not
feeling up to adding this to my list of problems to solve.
Does anyone know what I can do, short of reinstalling Fireworks MX 2004? I
suppose that would be the final solution, if there isn't any way to change
the settings so that Win XP realizes I have Fireworks.exe and that its a
graphics editor.
