Open folder > Desktop refreshes

When ever I try to open anything other than an
application (excluding Internet Explorer - I think of it
as a app, but I guess in this case it's not) the desktop
refreshes/redraws. I can not open My Documents, My
Computer - anything that would allow me to see files or
folders. I can use programs like word, e-mail, and
games. If I try to open a folder the screen goes blank
but my desktop. Then the icons and taskbar come back.

1. no Viruses
2. no system changes hardware or software

For each number in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browse
r Helper Objects
look up at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID which will have a sub key with the word server in it, usually but not always, inprocserver32. This is the file with the programming in it.

You then need to work out what ones are "normal" (eg most likely adobe acrobat will be there - that one isn't the problem).

Post the results.

Or Export the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browse
r Helper Objects (file menu)

then delete the sub key one by one till it all starts working. Import the exported key and just delete the one causing problems.

Report back here on the number and file (that inprocserver32 points to) that causes the problem.

Then delete that number from HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID and the file (you may need to rename and reboot before you can delete).
