Accessing content of desktop folder shortcuts causes screen redraw

I'm using XP Home SP2 and encounter an annoying screen redraw when accessing
content of desktop folder shortcuts. On my desktop I have shortcuts to
various folders on C drive. Sometimes when accessing these shortcuts:

1) the desktop flashes and redraws with some of the desktop icon text
displayed in cleartype font and other text displayed in standard font. I
don't have cleartype enabled. Right-click Refresh returns the icon text to
normal standard font.
2) at the same time the desktop flashes i hear a burst of hard drive activity.

The problem seems to 1) occur if I click into sub folders too quickly, 2)
occur once--when I haven't yet clicked into the folders after system is
started. After that the behavior does not seem to occur again until machine
is restarted, 3) happen on any of the folder shortcuts to C drive, but once
it happens on one, accessing the others oocurs without incident.

I'm doubting that system resources are the cause. I'm running a Pentium4
2.93 GHz with 1.49 GB ram and up to 224MB shared video memory.

Does anyone know the cause/solution of this issue?

Thanks,
Stinger
