Open and Preview commands on RIGHT click of jpg file

L

Lee Clayton

On my laptop when I RIGHT click on a jpg file, I can
select PREVIEW and get the Picture and Fax Viewer to view
my photos. Also, if I Right Click I can select OPEN and
it opens in Photoshop (very slow). On my wife's computer
I am trying to set it up the same way and if I go to the
Jpg options under Folder Options/File Types I can only
get it to set to either Photoshop OR Picture and Fax
Viewer. Can someone tell me how to get P&F viewer to
open from the PREVIEW command and Photoshop to open from
the OPEN command.

I use PicaView. When you right click on an image file the preview comes up in the context
menu itself. It's very utilitarian, especially when you're selecting a file to attach to
an email, and you're unsure of which file is which image, you just right click files in
the attachment box, and see their previews on the context menu. So, not only does
PicaView preview on right click on the context menus in My Computer and Windows Explorer,
but also in almost any box that lists files (File/Open, Insert Attachment etc.). I'm
still using the version that I got for Windows 98 and it works fine with Windows XP.
There's nothing to wait to load. It's instant view on the context menu with a right
click. Download and checkout the shareware version. You'll wonder how you did without
it.

That doesn't exactly answer my question. I want Open to
be associated with Photoshop and PREVIEW to be associated
with Picture and Fax Viewer. Anyone else have any
suggestions???

Click Start
Click Run
Type: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
Click the OK button
Then right click an image file and left click Preview

That should let the image formats associated with Photoshop Open in Photoshop when double
clicked, and the right click Preview should open in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

It leaves another setting around which results in the double click going
to Preview, and you need to r-click and choose the other association(s)
if wanted

Is this a joke? It was a legitmate question.

I'm not sure what your problem is but if you want a
certain program to always open a certain file, in this
case jpg then right click on the file then click the open
with and then put a dot in the "select a program from the
list" and then click the ok button and then choose your
program . If it isn't in the list then click the browse
button and find the .exe for the program. If you want the
jpg files to always open with this program then put a
check mark in the box at the bottom that says "always use
the selected program to open this type of file" . Now if
you want to add a program to the right click context menu
that's different. Post back with more precise information
on what you are trying to accomplish.
There are three types of people in computing, those that
can count and those that can't.

I understood the original rather well, as I have the exact same problem.

When using the the right-click option to permanently assign the Picture and
Fax Viewer to handle the file type, the "open" option disappears from the
right-click menu, leaving me with "Preview (bold), Edit, Print, Preview".

I / we want to be able to (again, as it's the original XP default) to double
click for preview and right-click to choose Open from the menu. This should
be possible without changing all File Type settings in the Folder options
(very tedious).

I used the "regsvr32 shimgvw.dll" trick before, but somehow this doesn't do
it anymore (maybe SP2 changed this behaviour...?).

Please help.

(You dont know the trouble I had finding this then registering so I could
reply)...
My situation is that Paint Shop Pro was my program for editing several
different graphic files but Picture and Fax Viewer would preview the pictures
when I double clicked on them. After installing SP2, double clicking the file
took me directly to Paint Shop Pro. Your situations may be slightly different
and may need other changes to get back to pre SP2 but this worked for me. I
found this answer in another thread from afh3.
-----afh3:
If you add a "Preview" action to each of your image file-types (jpg, tif,
bmp, and so on) via the
"Tools"->"Folder Options"->"File Types" dialog, and set it to be the default
command, it restores the functionality that was pre-SP2 in nature.

Here is the "Preview" command to use:
rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1
-----LEE601:
Note that if you click the Advance button and add Preview (or edit it if it
is already there), this will change all of your files associatiated with the
program listed for Open (or edit). After the change above, make preview the
default action, double clicking will bring up the Picture and Fax viewer and
the editor still should be whatever program is listed with open, in my case
Paint Shop Pro. You may have to change that program if it is not what you
wanted. Hope this gives you enough info to take care of business.
