Open 20 Windows and Windows XP stops responding

I have a Windows XP Pro (SP2) machine - Dual 3Ghz (HT ON), 1Gb RAM, 128MB
NVidia Quadro FX 1000, 72GB SCSI 320 10,000RPM Drive.

During the course of a day I could have as many as 8 Internet Explorer
windows open, 2 Windows Explorer windows open, Outlook, Word, Excel, 3
Instant Messenger... anyway when the total of apps/windows hits about 15-20
the OS stops responding completely.

For example - nothing happens when clicking on the Start menu, except that
the button depresses.
I cant Alt-Tab between apps, I cant even open Task manager, UNTIL I close
One Window. Then I can open another. But Im in the same boat after that new
app is open. If I run Task manager (After closing a window) I can see that
Im only using about 500MB of RAM between all apps running, and still have
about 2GB available between physical and virtual memory.

Could this be indicitive of a spyware application or have other people seen
this? I see no errors at all in the eventlog, sometimes if I push the system
long enough it will tell me it is out of resources, but like I said
everything looks fine in task manager.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
Bubba

There could be a number of issues. If you are sure that your PC is free of
viruses and spyware & you defragment the drive(s) regularly you might not
have enough memory. Users in my office have 256 MB for the most part and 20
windows is pushing the machines to the limit. Adding 256 MB and increasing
the size of the paging file should do it. If money is no object, I'd replace
the 128 with 2 - 256 MB modules (depending on how many slots and type of
memory).
