Can anyone tell me how to install only a part of Open Office?

I select Custom install and Writer, but then it installs the entire
package.

You can't - it's either all or nothing. But hey, the complete install is
very much smaller than MS Office anyway....

home website for
open office.

there are faq's and a
open forum there
as well.

maybe there is
an "open writer"
for download....
