Hello,
I have a ASUS A8N-SLI Premium motherboard, Athlon64 dual Core processor, 2
gigs of RAM and WindowsXP. My computer has two built in USB hubs, one
primary one with four ports and secondary 'plug-in' type.
My problem is this: I have a Pinnacle DVC90 video capture device that I am
using to transfer old video films onto DVD. It works by streaming data over
a USB2 connection to the computer, and the computer uses its own processing
power to convert the raw data into mpeg-2. The problem started when I
realised I was getting a lot of dropped frames, but could not figure out why.
The computer should be powerful enough to transfer the data without dropping
frames. It was suggested that I change the USB port to see if would make a
difference. I discovered that the other USB ports would either not work at
all, or would work very slowly with a frame rate lower than 1 frame a second.
The original port I used worked fine most of the time, but would
occasionally drop frames. When I changed it, there was a disastrous drop in
performance in the other USB ports.
This has led me to be concerned that there is a problem with my USB ports.
It seems that only one port works. This port is on the secondary hub, and a
port on the same hub next to it does not work at all. The ports on the
primary hub work at a very poor frame rate.
I had not really noticed a problem with the ports before, having only really
used them for my bluetooth keyboard and mouse. However, there was some
problems with my mouse when gaming, and I am wondering if that was due to
bluetooth being unable to keep up, or whether the USB port was not
functioning at full efficiency.
What I would like to know is this: does anyone think this could be a problem
with my USB port or hardware? I have upgraded the motherboards BIOS to the
latest BETA drivers in the hope that it would solve the issue, but it has not
done so. I have tried swapping out and removing devices, but this has made
no difference. For some reason, the DVC90 will not function on any USB port
except for one port on the secondary hub.
Can someone please help? I am at my wits end. Obviously I am very
concerned, as this could mean that my USB hubs are compromised. Any
suggestions would be welcome,
Daniel
