Only "Log off" appears from Start -> Shutdown

My Toshiba laptop succesfully Suspends and Hibernates, but its XP Pro
SP2 only presents these options after logging off. Not very useful.

When selecting Start -> Shutdown, the only option is "Log Off".

Thanks for any help you can provide.

What happens if you do a Control Alt Delete? Do you then see the
options to "standby" "shutdown" "logoff"? Sometimes when you only see
"logoff" the user account you're logged on as may be corrupt.

When I perform a Control Alt Delete and select the "Shut Down..."
button, only "Log Off" is displayed in the pull down of options.

If I "Log Off", then Hibernate and Stand By are available and working
from the bootup login screen.

Jim:

Either the user account is corrupt or someone has (perhaps by using
gpedit) removed the ability for that user account to shutdown or go
into standby/hibernate. Gpedit is only available in XP Pro - since
you're using Pro, it's possible that permissions have been changed.

If you're the administrator, check to see if the account you're using
to log in has permissions to shutdown/standby/hibernate. If it does,
then the account is probably corrupt. You'll need to create another
for yourself and copy to the new account. Then you can delete the old
account.
