Could someone advise me how to download online video from internet? Or is
there any powerful software for online video download? The downloader
software that I'm now using can only download video from some websites but
fail for some other websites. Many thanks!

p.s. I would like to cross post my question to more than 1 discussion group
but I don't know the USENET designation of the groups, so I'll post my
question seperately in different groups. If this cause any incovenience to
you, pls forgive me.

Do you wish to download the file or record the video and audio?

Note that there are different types of files and transmission protocols,
too.

Can you give an example of what you would like to capture? A Web
address?

You can download most videos that are posted on You-Tube with the help of
Vdownloader - just do a quick Google search for it and you'll find info and
a download link but, to save you the hassle, here's one I did earlier...

To download the VDownloader - a small util that allows the downloading of
otherwise view-online material and can convert between many formats offline
as well. Can save video as AVI; MPEG2; PAL (DVD); IPOD COMPATIBLE; 3GP
(MOBILE) and MP3 (AUDIO ONLY) - 3.5MB Download - Really simple to use:

Dear Daave

The following are 2 examples of websites that I can't download the
video :

http://www.sun7news.com/index.php?code=22xy38wa651FV3L5XlH7&CMP=OTC-WWYCOVS1001

http://mytv.tvb.com/news/sundayreport/17211

Can you advise how I can download the videos? Many thanks!

In this post, I'll handle the first link.

After the video is over, you need to find it in your Temporary Internet
Files (TIF) folder. One way to do this:

In Internet Explorer 7, click Tools | Internet Options. Under Browser
History, click Settings. In the new window, click View Files. This will
take you to your TIF folder, which should be here:

C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

Once there, click on the Size column so that there is a triangle
pointing down. This shows you files in order of size, with the largest
one at the top. In your case, it should be:

NCB3-Happy_Birthday.swf?1755414642

You need to copy it. Right-click it and select Copy. Now open up a
location you would like to save it to. It can be anywhere. Once, there,
click Paste.

Now that you see this file, does it end with .swf? That is how you know
for sure if you have the right kind of file. If your settings hide
extensions, show them:

Open Windows Explorer (double-clicking any folder should work). Click
Tools, then Folder Options. Then the View tab. If the box next to "Hide
extensions for known file types" is checked, clear the check and then
click OK.

Now you need to rename the file so that it has the proper extension.
Right-click and select Rename. place the cursor next to the f at the
end. Hit backspace three times and change the extension to flv

Hopefull now you can play this file. If not, you need to install a media
player that will. There are many that do this. One such popular free
player is VLC media player:

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Post back and let us know if you were successful.

[snip of some really complicated stuff]

It would be MUCH simpler to

1) install Firefox
2) install the add-on "Download Helper"

Any time you then visit any site with a video, you can use DH to
download it to the folder of your choice. Just click the DH icon in
the toolbar, and go.

Simple.

Easy.

I believe that FF also has an add-on that will not only download the
video, but it will convert it to the format of your choice after the
download completes.

I use Replay Converter (pay-to-use) to do converting.

Okay, I got ahead of myself. The method above only works for .flv files
that don't have an .flv extension in the TIF folder. This file is a .swf
(Shockwave Flash) file. So don't change the extension. Or if you did,
change it back!

Then, right-click and choose Open With, and choose Internet Explorer
(you need to first click "Select the program from a list").

Since the ActiveX control is safe, you may click on the yellow strip and
choose "Allow Blocked Content." And then Yes.

Right-click inside the browser and select Play. Click on the yellow
triangle and Bob's your uncle.

Or just use the method Mike mentioned in his post. :)

Dear Daave

I've tried your suggestion. I can get the video in my first link, but
something is missing ..... the video is somewhat like a e-card, you can add
you friend's name there & send to your friends .... the original video in
the link should have my friend's name added in it, now I can download the
video but my friend's name is off!!! So it is just like a "blank" video
pending for a name to be filled in .... :(

so this method seems can't fully apply to this video ...... :(

And also this method has 1 drawback ~~~ we need to wait until the video is
over, so if the video is 1 hour long, that means I also need to wait for 1
hour before I can get it, so not very convenient .....

May be I get something wrong in the procedure?

Anyway, thank you so much for your time spent on writing such a long answer
for me! really appreciate this very much! :)

Dear Mike

I've downloaded Firefox & tried to search for add-on "Download Helper", may
I clarify is "Download Helper" a software name, or a type of software for
downloading? as I couldn't find "Download Helper" in my add-on search
.........

But I've tried other add-on downloader softwares, yet I still can't download
the video (may be just because I don't know how to use those softwares!) :(

Okay, I see what you mean.

FWIW, you don't have to watch the entire video first. You just need to
download it first. When you open the Web page, you will see a status
bar. As long as you have a fast enough Internet connection, the video
will have finished downloading considerably before it finishes playing
in your browesr window. The status bar will show you when this point is
reached.

One way to accomplish what you want is to do the following in Internet
Explorer:

Vist the Web page once more. After the video has downloaded you may
pause the video to prevent the next Web page from loading. Then:

File | Save As...

and in the "Save as type..." box, select "Webpage, complete." This will
give you one file called Sun7News_com.htm and a folder called
"Sun7News_com_files" that will have all the components necessary to
recreate the page, including the customization.

Mike's Firefox method may also work for this type of mixed video; I
haven't tested it yet.

Dear Daave

Sorry for late reply. I've tried your suggestion in the first link
(http://www.sun7news.com/index.php?code=22xy38wa651FV3L5XlH7&CMP=OTC-WWYCOVS1001).
Now I can play the video with "complete" components in the .htm file saved,
but why can't I see a video file in the folder saved? I hope I can save the
video file instead of a webpage.

I haven't tried the 2nd link yet
(http://mytv.tvb.com/news/sundayreport/17211) as it seems to take much longer
time to wait for complete download of the video, but I guess it will have
similar result.

Thanks again.

DownloadHelper icon on the top left toolbar start to rotate (3 colour balls
start to rotate) which shows some files are being captured? but I only see a
very small mp3 file inside there (which only read out the name "Eva") ......
could you advise again?

builders are using super high security technology to prevent download! :(

The first works fine here... the second doesn't.

When the little balls are rotating, the file can be downloaded. CLICK
up there and choose the file to download.

I dialog window should open, showing where the download will be going,
and which will allow you to either accept the file name, or to name it
yourself. Don't rename the extension.

That's what I tried to do before, but apparently you need the entire Web
page to mix the two videos together (for the customized result)!
