Online media content stopped playing

Since two days ago, IE6 seems to have lost the ability to play online
multimedia content on one machine.

If one clicks on video content on www.cnn.com or www.msnbc.com , the media
player popup does open up but will not start the embedded player and play
the selected clip. Sometimes the player (WMP) does load on MSNBC but returns
a message stating that the selected video is not available. But another
machine on the next table plays the same clip perfectly fine!

No hardware or software changes were made on this machine that could be tied
down to this sudden behavior. No system changes were made at all on this PC
for over a month now. AdAware and SypBot returned a totally clean machine
status. So did AntiVir and TrendMicro Online Scan, as well as Microsoft
Malicious Software Removal Tool. The required Active-X controls are enabled
appropriately.

Everything works perfectly on the other PCs used so we are at a loss to
pinpoint an area to look for a possible cause for this oddity. Till Saturday
IE was working perfectly on this PC too!

Regards and thanks very much in advance for any illumination.

Thanks for reading this post.

The issue was resolved with local advice. Turned out that the user
inadvertently opened the proxy setting on a streaming media recording
utility by mistake (after opening Windows Media Recorder instead of Windows
Media Player!). Resetting the options properly had everything working as
before again. Still cannot figure out how this worked but we are not
complaining!

Regards and thanks again.
