One thing I REALLY HATE about Outlook and Office.....

C

ChinaLamb

I really hate the fact that I open an email, open the attachment (word or
Publisher) , then spend 4 hours editing a document someone sent me.

I press save, and close the document.

I open Word or Publisher again to work on the file, and It is not in the
recent documents list.

Then I remember that it was an attachment in an email - Open that attachment
again, but what I get is the un-edited version.

The version that I worked on for 4 hours is GONE!

This happens in Outlook, as well as Live mail.

Really sucks to be me right now.

Any way to get these documents back?

They are possibly in your Temp or Temp/internet folders......BTW, this
happens with ALL email clients, not just MS ones....

If you open an attachment to edit or that you wish to store elsewhere you
need to use 'save as'

However, it IS 2008...

One would think that Microsoft could find a way to fix this issue, or at
least shut off the "Save" button and require a "Save As"...

To have hit "Save" and have it disappear is so disheartening.

If you edit a document attached to email, save it to My Documents before
closing. If you changed email messages while it was open, it might be in
the securetemp folder - if you open the message then the doc and edit, save
and close the doc then the email, it should update the attachment.

For more info, see:

No, they don't need it changed to a Save as button because it is possible to
save the updates to the attachment - plus it would be difficult for the
application to detect the document was opened from an email message.

Might I offer another suggestion? Unless you've opened a million documents
since the amazing disappearing document, check in Start-My Recent Documents.
It may be there. It may also appear in the Word list of the last few edited
documents (which I think is default-set to 4). If its in one of those
locations, simply open it, then "Save-As" to wherever you want it.

The main problem is that most people don't open emails anymore, they use the
preview pane...

Ideally, that functionality should also work when viewing an email from the
preview pane.

If users don't change messages in preview while the attachment is open it
will be saved back to the original message. Users need to learn to use the
Save as button, not Save. You can also move the securetemp folder so its
easier to find the message.

Microsoft wanting the user to learn to do it the way the software needs you
to do it is one of the reasons that MAC is gaining in popularity among all
my friends.

It would be nice if little things like this could be fixed. Easy said from
a person that is not on their programming staff....

There is nothing to fix - it's a user training problem. Not everyone wants
to edit attachments and have the changes saved to the original attachment on
the message and most people know to either save the attachment first or use
Save as.

I don't think the Mac will save changes back to the original attachment
(I'll have to double check) - I know none of the applications I have
installed on the Mac will detect that I opened an email attachment and will
tell me I need to use Save as. I have a Mac and I can guarantee you it's not
an end all, be all. It sucks in its own way.

I try to regenerate this. Here's what I got:

I press save, and close the document.

It gets saved in "Temporary Internet Files\ said:

True but when you close your email where the file is attached to, you're
asked "Do you want to save changes?" If you click Yes, you will have the
updated version (re)attached to that mail. If you click No, the email AND
attachment(s) are unchanged (which is normal).
The version that I worked on for 4 hours is GONE!

See above.

Thank you for your reply, I couldn't find this folder, till I googled
Vista and outlook, etc. The folder for ol2007 is Content.Outlook....

Here is a question for ya. How come showing hidden files and showing system
files didn't make this folder visable?

Anyhoo. Thanks for the tip - helped me find the answer.

Windows Explorer appears to have code in it that prevents browsing to that
folder no matter how the hidden flags are set.

Sorry, the location I gave you earlier was based on WinXP and OL2003. I'm
not sure where it is in Vista + OL2007 but it doesn't matter because you've
found it.

I don't know but that's the way it works. My WinXP settings is as follows:

Show hidden files and folders (this is selected)
Hide protected OS files (this is unchecked)

With the above settings, that temp folder is still invisible. How do I know
it's there? When I open a .doc email attachment and click Save As, it
defaults to that location (in my case it's at C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK49\).

No problem. Btw, Gordon already mentioned this tip on his June 22 reply:
"They are possibly in your Temp or Temp/internet folders......"
