I have an Epson Stylus C86 inkjet printer. It has one black and three
color cartridges. In the past I have replaced them all easily, but
this time the yellow cartridge is stuck and I cannot remove it. Any
solutions other than wrecking the printer?

BUY A CANON IP5200 AND USE OEM INK. IT IS A MUCH BETTER PRINTER. THE C
SERIES EPSON PRINTERS ARE CLOGGING MACHINES.

One common problem is the waste pipe come off from under the dockin
bay, when this happens you'll get no cleaning action. Spy the clea
plastic pipe on the right hand side under the docking bay, switch o
or do a cleaning cycle and you should see the ink 'gurgling' throug
the pipe if you don't it's either blocked or come adrift

Or get a pencil and gently 'feel' the pipe if it offer's an
resistance then it can be assumed it's attached if it flops abou
then obviously it isn't

The pipe draws the ink from the nozzles by the pump that's driven fro
the paper feed rollors, the ink then sent to the wast pad, if thi
dosn't work the ink will just dry up on the nozzles and in th
inkwell

Yes the Canon printers are less problematic, got a ip5000 las
June/July and not one manual head clean in that time and they'er fa
more economical to run

One possible thing that would keep the cartridge from withdrawing might
be if the chip on the cartridge has fallen off. The contact pins from the
printer that normally would rest on the chip surface would then completely
push into the empty cavity of the printer where the chip used to be, and
thus keep the cartridge from being withdrawn. If you would look at another
cartridge and inspect it you will understand what I'm writing.
As you attempt to remove the yellow where do you feel the drag coming? If
it is from the pin area then remove one of the other colors and inspect
those pins to see how you might be able to push them back with a thin knife
as you attempt to remove the yellow - if that is the problem area.

Thank you Jan.
Your answer gave me something definite to go on in looking for the
problem. It turned out to be a little blue plastic gizmo (I don't know
where it came from) that had somehow gotten wedged between the
cartridge and the release lever so the lever couldn't be pulled forward
towards the cartridge to release it. I should have taken a much closer
look in really good light than I had previously, and also studied the
correct appearance of the whole thing.
I do understand what you were talking about and took a very close
look at the whole setup so that now I understand what is going on much
better.

Some cartridge have a release tab you need to press, you may have to
press a bit more than usual if the tolerances are off on the molding.

The other problem is a out of spec cartridge with a chip that is too
recessed and the wires that contact the chip get tangled or bend or
caught on the ledge, or get ripped out when the cartridge is removed.
You want to do what you can to avoid this, a it is very costly to
repair. Those wires are hardened metal and tend to snap off if they are
bent. You may try feeding some stiff thin card material on that side of
the cartridge down so it may allow the contacts to be pushed from the
cartridge. It may be best to leave this to a service depot rather than
to force things.
