One folder locks up PC?

I have a folder on my desktop, contains various different types of files and
when I try to open it CPU usage goes to 100% and PC locks up.
Any advice on how to troubleshoot this welcome.
Using XP Pro/SP3, regular disc clean up, defrag, AV and malware scans.

Can you go to it using Windows Explorer without locking up?

Thanks for the replies, ran CHECKDSK after reboot and all seems OK now.
