Olympus DSS Files - Failing to Send as Attachment (Outlook 2003)

I am using Outlook 2003. Whenever I attach a Olympus DSS file (which I
understand is an 'application/octet-stream' file type - not that I know what
that means!) it fails to send. I have tried removing Word as the editor and
I have turned off the outgoing email scanner on my virus protection software.
I have even tried zipping the file and attaching it, still no joy. I
receive the following error message each time:

Task 'Bigpond - Sending' reported error (0x8004210B) : 'The operation timed
out waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP) server. If you continue to
receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service
provider (ISP).'

Any suggestions? NB: I have been able to send the file using Yahoo email,
but I want to send it using Outlook!

Try changing the attachment format by pressing the Options... button while
composing the message.
