Old volume icon problem, new annoying tricks

I know this *seems* like an old problem and the fixes are quite simple
but this one is a bit different. For the past 2 days, when I load
Windows the volume icon doesn't appear in the notification area. So I
go to "Control Panel," then to "Sound and Audio Devices" but "Place
Volume Icon in Taskbar" is already checked... so I un-check it and
apply, then I re-check it and the icon appears. When I reboot my
computer the icon is missing...

So I go back to control panel, sound and audio, re-check "place volume
in taskbar," hit apply, *but then* after doing all of that, I right
click on the taskbar and choose "properties." I click on the "taskbar"
tab, then on "customize," and make sure that the "volume" icon is set
to "always show," click "ok," then "apply." Reboot, and still no volume
icon in the notification area.

Ok, so then I went to the Windows XP website and found this little
tidbit and tried it out:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM
drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to
prevent it from starting automatically.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
4. Type the following lines at the command prompt, pressing ENTER after
each line, where CD-ROM drive is the drive letter of the computer's
CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD-ROM, and
system_root is the path and folder name where the Windows system files
are located (generally C:\Windows):
CD-ROM drive:
cd i386
expand sndvol32.ex_ system_root\system32\sndvol32.exe

Reboot, and yet again there's no volume icon in the system tray..

Ok, so then I:

Went to Run
Typed in: MSCONFIG
Clicked on: Expand File Button
In File to Restore typed: sndvol32.exe
In Restore From type: C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\driver.cab
In Save File In type C\Windows\System
Clicked Expand
Clicked Ok
Clicked Yes to restart

Rebooted and still no volume icon... I'm spent, does anybody out there
have any other ideas?

Hi,

Try this:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm

Click on the letter "V" at the top and scroll down to "Volume Control".

Note: on the above page there is a line:

EXPAND -R X:\I386\powrprof.dl_ C:\Windows\System32

The 'X' in this line is your CD drive letter. Substitute yours.
Note the spaces: before and after -R and before C:\Windows\System32\

Luck!

Thanks for the quick response, I really do appreciate it. I think I may
have found what the problem was. After retracing my steps, I remembered
that a few days ago I installed Alcohol 120% as well as PowerISO.
Seeing that I haven't restarted my machine for a few days, I didn't
seem to notice said problem. I just uninstalled Alcohol 120% and
PowerISO, rebooted and voilà, the Volume Icon reappeared! Now that I
got my volume icon back, is there anybody out there who might know why
this, "work-around" actually worked? Or, more importantly, why it
happened in the first place?

Install one at a time and test. See if you can isolate which one is causing
the problems. On the other hand, sometimes, the problem just won't
reappear.

Hello again, Bill

Sure glad you got it fixed - good bit of detective work. Sorry, but no
experience with Alcohol 120%.
