Old Registry File Access

Hello. I was wondering if it was possible to open RegEdit on a specific
hard drive? I have an old hard drive connected to my new computer via
USB and I want to get some of the registry files off of it, however
when I run RegEdit, I can only access the files on my current machine.
Is there anyway to get the ones from my old hard drive onto the one I'm
now using? Thanks.

Under WinXP you can use regedit.exe to open any off-line
registry. Just click File / Load Hive.

I see where you mean, but the "Load Hive" option is grayed out. What
should I do to change this?

Oh wait, I see it now, I just had to select a different registry key.
Now I can browse for the registry files, but I don't know where they
are... Where are registry files stored on the Hard Drive?

This depends on the version of Windows that you're trying to access. For Windows XP, by default, they're in X:\Windows\System32\Config and are the files that do not have extensions (SYSTEM, SOFTWARE, SAM and etc.). The user portion of the Registry is stored in X:\Documents and Settings\<username> and is called NTUSER.DAT.

Thanks, I'm getting further... Now it asks me for a Key Name?
