I'm trying to load games like MS Golf, Encarta 95, from
the MS Home collection, but I keep getting error
messages. Something to do with a temp folder not being
present. Will these things work on xp?

Just for kicks, try creating a TEMP directory (folder).
Do that in Windows Explorer, with the exact path being requested.

The path name has a bunch of ~ so, i cannot see what to
call the file names.

Maybe. Try running them in Compatibility Mode (Help & Support for
information on how to do this). If they won't run, then the answer is
"no". You won't break anything by trying.
