Old problem fixed, new one today

Thanks to all those that replied concerning the totally blue screened
laptop.

I have another one for you, and hopefully this is easier. I have installed
win2k, clean install, and am adding software to make this laptop workable.
In the middle of installing office 2000 I get an error box that says I am
missing fonts in c:\winnt\fonts\bkant.tff.

When I installed win2k I did a custom install and loaded EVERYTHING. The
only thing not loaded was the serial number of the actual cd that was burned
into it at the factory. Could the program have skipped some things inspite
of the full installation? Is there anyway to get these fonts because the
wonder of office 2000 is it will not continue to load without the missing
font.

- It's probably bkant.ttf, not bkant.tff
- Seeing that this group looks at Win2000 issues, you'd
be much better off posting your question in an Office 2000
newsgroup.

Oops, yeah it is .ttf. Hence the reason you are getting the big bucks and I
am sending in questions. But, why wouldn't it be a win2k problem? I have
used both the win2k and office cd's on my desktop computer with no problems.
Both disks worked fine without problems. I will post to the other group, but
if you have any epiphanies, please don't keep them to yourself.

volunteer's work . . .

There are thousands of newsgroups, and experts in particular
topics tend to hang around where they know what they're
talking about. Furthermore, their replies are peer-reviewed
by other experts. Your query has nothing to do with Win2000 -
it could just has well have arisen on a Win98 installation.
You need to make the distinction between "Hardware",
"Operating System" (e.g. Windows 2000) and Applications
(e.g. Office XP). Each topic has its own newsgroups.

To illustrate the point: What would you think of someone who
posted a query in this forum about QuickBook Pro? It's an
accounting program, and has nothing to do with Windows!

Boy, get a few initials after your name and you lose all sight of a joke.
No, I do not think the folks that answer questions get paid for their
answers, if they did, then my check must be in the mail.

Consider this, while I am indeed stuck trying to install office 2000, it is
looking in a windows 2000 folder for certain files. C:\winnt is a windows
2000 folder. That is why I posted here first. If someone posted a question
concerning quickbook pro, I would wonder why, unless quickbook was searching
in a windows 2000 folder.

Office did not create the winnt folder, therefore there may have been
something about the installation of win2k that did not go right. Don't mean
to sound hard headed but I guess you did not understand exactly my situation
was. I know what is hardware, what is software and what is an application.
The laptop is hardware (doing it's best to pose as a paperweight), windows
2000 pro is the software (that for some reason did not load correctly) and
office 2000 is the application (that is looking in a software folder on the
hardware).

Is there anyway to get the full list of fonts that is supposed to be loaded
in the winnt folder? That way I could just search and download them all,
burn a cd and copy to the folder.

or even just zip up my whole fonts folder for you if you think that
might help. By the way, the name that displays with bkant is "Book
Antiqua", and there are several others in that family here too. These
are old fonts, 11/12/98 at least.

I can not give you more names since the installation cancels. Guess there is
no full listing of what is in the folder once you put win2k on your machine?

I can run a search if only I knew what to look for.

Hi again,

I've installed a bunch of fonts that didn't come with Windoze, so I
can't really tell you what to look for. I also took a look at the 2000
install CD and couldn't find the fonts that must be on there, they're
probably in a cab file or some such thing.

If you can come up with anything I can help with, just let me know and
I'll see what I can do.

I would like to thank all those that replied and gave good advice. I found a
listing of the fonts loaded with windows 2000 and just my luck, the font
that it is looking for is not on the list. Rather than take up more of your
time and pull out more of my hair, I have decided to go with OpenOffice.
Downloaded and installed with no problem. It even exports as pdf files.

Kevin - in case nobody mentioned it, there are many free font
collections on the web. Thousands of fonts. Same for icons, btw.

If you install too many fonts, though, some curious things can happen.
"Too many" is often not documented. With NT4, for example, and something
like 1800 fonts installed, Lotus97 rolled over and died with a
content-free last-gasp message. Took me a day to find out, via an
obscure aside in a Lotus knowledgebase post, that Lotus did that if more
than x (a large x, something like 1200) fonts were installed. Haven't
tried it on W2k, and won't. And I don't even want to know why the
bizarre behavior. I'd rather make up a reason involving sleep
deprivation in a cubicle somewhere.
