I did something I shouldn't have (ran McAfee QuickClean Lite) and now all of
the fonts in the C:\WINNT\Fonts folder have disappeared...or so it seems! The
only way I know to reinstall them is to copy the fonts from the
C:\WINNT\Fonts folder on a duplicate laptop to the folder on my problem
laptop.
The font installation procedure seems to work ok.
I can see and use the fonts as long as I don't CLOSE the
C:\WINNT\Fonts folder. Once the folder is closed, or I shutdown my laptop,
the fonts disappear again.
I'm running W2K SP4 (originally SP1) and don't have an
official Windows 2000 SP4 installation disk. I do have the
official Windows 2000 SP1 disk, but do not want to endure the bloodshed of
trying to convert from SP1 to SP4 again!
Why don't the font files stay visible and accessible in the C:\WINNT\Fonts
folder? Did McAfee QuickClean accidetally delete some needed registry entries
or something like that?
What's interesting is that even though I can't see the font files in the
folder, and I see garbage characters on the desktop and inside application
programs, there MUST BE something in the C:\WINNT\Fonts folder. When I
right-click to look at the folder properties, there supposedly are 2,000+
files in the folder, none visible. Everytime time I attempt to reinstall
fonts, the number increases by 231.
I realize that I should never that used McAfee QuickClean Lite without
backing up my laptop...but it's too late
Any ideas on how to recover?
Does it sound like a missing registry entry or something?
