Lost Fonts in C:\WINNT\Fonts Folder

Something happened to my laptop and now all of the fonts in the
C:\WINNT\Fonts folder have disappeared! The only way I know to reinstall is
to copy the folder from a duplicate laptop to my problem laptop.

What I did was copy the contents from C:\WINNT\Fonts to a zip disk and
copied the zip disk contents to C:\WINNT\Fonts on the laptop where the fonts
keep disappearing.

The font installation procedure seems to work ok.
I can see the fonts for a few minutes, and then they all disappear. The
folder is empty again!

I'm running Win2K SP4 (originally SP1) and don't have an
official Windows 2000 SP4 installation disk. I do have the
official Windows 2000 SP1 disk, but do not want to endure the bloodshed of
trying to convert from SP1 to SP4 again!

Why don't the font files stay in the C:\WINNT\Fonts folder?

What's interesting is that even though I can't see the font files in the
folder, and I see garbage characters on the desktop and in application
programs, there MUST BE something in the C:\WINNT\Fonts folder. When I
right-click to look at the folder properties, there supposedly are 2,000+
files in it. Everything time I attempt to install fonts, the number
increases by 231.

The fonts apparently ARE in the folder, but Windows doesn't seem to be using
them. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?

Did you ever fix this. I have the same problem on my daughters PC. I have to
copy the fonts in every time we reboot. I don't think it's anything to do
with service packs. My next step would be to reinstall W2k as a repair but
would like to know if there is something quicker

DId you ever find an answer? I have the identical problem. Reinstalling the
fonts after every reboot is a pain. I don't think it's anything to do with
service packs. My next step would bre to reinstall W2k as a repair or upgrade
but I would prefer a quicker fix

Jon, for me, it turned out to be a Office 2000 solution, not Windows 2000.

I went into MS Excel (probably could have gone into Word as well) and ran
DETECT and REPAIR which properly reinstalled all of the fonts.

Before doing that, I did drop to DOS and deleted all of the multiple fonts
in the C:\WINNT\Fonts folder. It may be possible that DETECT and REPAIR
would have automatically eliminated the multiple fonts. I just don't know.

Take care,
Willie ...
