This is somewhat off-topic so I apologize in advance for
any inconvenience. My principal asked me if I could get
an old laptop working so that one of the students could
use it. It is an IBM Thinkpad 760C. During boot up I get
an error screen with two codes 00161 and 00163. There is
the option to cancel or proceed and in both cases I get
to a date/ time setup screen but that's as far as it will
go. Any help or direction on where to find help would be
appreciated.

You may have more luck posting at one of the laptop newsgroups like
comp.laptop or one of the many ibm newsgroups like ibm.ibmpc.thinkpad.

Visit IBM support and search for the latest BIOS update
for your specific model number and flash the BIOS. If
re-flashing the BIOS does not work, its possible someone
spilled a liquid on the keyboard at one time and the keyboard
or motherboard will now require replacement. If that is the case,
don't bother going any further since IBM replacement parts
are expensive and will far exceed the nominal value of that old ThinkPad.

Can be a problem with a old bios battery? Have you tried to change it?
(I'm suposing)

Very unlikely that it is a motherboard battery issue, although you may
need to run the IBM Setup Utility. You will definitely need to go to
IBM's site for tech support and look up those error messages. All IBM
error messages have very distinct meanings and fixing their machines
require IBM-specific utilities and methods.

Cheers,

Malke
