I have tried to get ride of some programs I don't use, I deleted all the ones I could in add/remove rpograms, deleted thier folders in explorer for ones that weren't in the add/remove list, and even went into to reg edit to get rid of the final remains of things like, Window Washer, Bear Share, etc
Why do they still show up as unchecked items in the srat up items of MSCONFIG
If I have completely deleted the items, how can I remove them from MSCONFIG

Judson,

See Tip 148 in MVP Kelly's site: Clear Disabled Items from Msconfig Startup
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

NOTE: The disabled startup items are moved here:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg]

a.. Click 'Start', 'Run' and type in REGEDIT
b.. Click into HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
c.. Click into 'Software'
d.. Click into 'Microsoft'
e.. Click into 'Shared Tools'
f.. Click into 'MSCONFIG'
g.. Click into 'startupfolder' and see if any keys inside folder are
related to an 'UNCHECKED' program in MSCONFIG/Startup

a.. Click into 'startupreg' and see if any keys inside folder are related
to an 'UNCHECKED' program in MSCONFIG/Startup
After deleting the appropriate keys in REGEDIT, Exit REGEDIT

If you unchecked them, MSConfig moved the registry entries concerned so
the uninstalls did not find them. Use Start - Run - regedit and open to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSconfig

and look for them as subkeys under \startupfolder or \startupreg and
highlight and delete the unwanted subkeys

Go here, http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

select #148 right hand side of page, download & save the
file.
Click it to start up and it will remove the unchecked items
from
msconfig.

It worked right for me.

Mike.
