Old HP Laserjet 3100 with Win7 - Really no way?

Hi out there,

Maybe this question has been answered before, but I still have a
problem that many others may also have or had before:

I still have an old HP Laserjet 3100 all-in-one printer/fax that works
very well with Win XP over the years. Just installed Win7 additionally
on seperate HDD as a dual-boot solution on the same PC, but LJ 3100 was
not found and is not usable under Win7.
As I have learned from Googeling, the LJ3100 is an GDI-Printer, which is
not supported by Win7 and HP with drivers anymore. OK so far for me.

If I need to print something on LJ3100 I am booting XP and it works like
it always did. Does a workaround exist for this problem regarding LJ3100
and Win7? Did anybody get this printer to work on this OS (W7)?
Is XP-mode under Win7 a solution that really works for anybody out here?
I have tried around a little bit, but it does not seem to work (maybe
I made a mistake in configuration? Not sure about his...
Or really do I need to buy a new printer only to print with Win7?

Many questions, I know, but LJ3100 is IMHO does exacty what I need,
but only in XP, not in W7. Any ideas?

Many thanks for your help, hints and assistance:

Since it is an all-in-one, you are SOL.

It should work.

1) Install the VM for XP. I assume that's done.
2) Install the drivers for the LJ3100 in the XP system. Test and make
sure you can print.
3) Make sure that networking works in the XP VM.
4) Share the printer in the XP VM.
5) Connect, in Win 7, to the shared printer from 4.
6) Print on it from Win 7.

You don't say if this is the 32 or 64-bit version of Win7.
Sort of important detail. If 64-bit I'd guess the answer is SOL,
unless a virtual machine (VM) is an acceptable solution.
