Old hard drive on new motherboard

I have an existing Celeron 1.2 Ghz EMachine with a WD
Caviar 40 Gig hard drive and running on Window XP Home
Edition.

I just purchased a new computer with almost the same
setup, that is, an EMachine with WD Caviar 40 Gog hard
drive and running on Windows XP Home Edition.

The main difference between the two computers is that the
new machine is a Celeron 2.6 Ghz and the motherboard is
different.

I wanted to use my old hard drive in the new machine to
avoid having to reinstall all my software and settings in
the new drive. However, when I put in the old drive in
the new computer, I cannot even get the machine to
recognize the old hard drive. I get the blue error
message screen with the code 0x0000007B.

In talking to Emachine tech support, they indicated that
this message indicates that the old hard drive does not
have the hard drive controller driver and chipset drivers
for the new motherboard. Is there any way I can install
these drivers on the old hard drive?

I have tried:

1- Putting both hard drives in the new computer as master
and slave. The machine will only boot up with the new
hard drive as the master, and this does not solve the
problem.
2- The EMachine only comes with a restore XP, so I cannot
reinstall XP over the old hard drive without erasing the
existing data.
3- I have downloaded the drivers from Intel but when I try
and install them (on old hard drive in old machine), it
does not allow me to as it says the system already all the
necessary drivers.

Any thoughts???

thanks,

A "Repair Install" is going to be required but the eMachine
Restore CD will not be able to accomplish this. Only thing
you can do is to purchase a conventional "Full Version" of
Windows XP and proceed with a "Repair Install".

A different CPU and motherboard chipset is nowhere near "almost the same
setup." Sorry, but I doubt there's any possibility of accomplishing this
without an XP repair reinstallation.

Rather than try to get the old drive working as the system disk of the
new, which sounds as if it will only be possible by a complete clean
start, I would put it back on the old one, and back up your settings
onto spare space on it using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard -
read Gary Woodruff's article on FAST at
http://aumha.org/win5/a/fast.htm

Then plug the drive into the new machine as a slave and complete the
transfer. After that, either put it back - or if the old machine is
effectively going to junk, keep it as a second drive
