Old game compatability.

I run XP Home, so when I put in an old game (Descent, doom, etc) it ran fine
when I changed the compatability info. And recently, after I installed a game
(I deleted and tried a diff game after the problem occurred, just to be sure)
old game installations would no longer load. I have a ton of old FPS and
space sims that I like to play, and cant ATM because of this. What happens is
a command prompt starts, then I get an error.

The error says:" C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmd.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'close' to terminate the
application."

Is there anything I can do to get the games running back?
